stackhouses
the "hives" of the far east of taliesin are densely-packed apartment buildings that, when they were built around forty years ago, presented endless gray concrete with single tiny balconies. in the time since, roughwild contamination has caught up to streak the walls with green and flower-colours -- and so to the inhabitants have painted as far as they could reach and fly bright flags from stackhouse to stackhouse. although not quite slum conditions, each stackhouse contains hundreds of shoebox-sized homes. the alleyways and streets below are thick with trees and overgrowth.

green markets
the market district of the hives, the green markets sprawl awkwardly up into two or three stackhouses and then haphazardly, a riot of colour, under the canopy. if you go into the center stackhouse and down into the basement, you can get through into the black markets in the subway and sewers below. between the two markets, everything is purchasable here - just not all of it is legal. aos si tend not to pass through here if they're not hiding, although they do frequent the fighting rings hidden under ground.

limerick
limerick is a shantytown constructed in the spaces between some of the more well spaced stackhouses - it's layers of shacks and shanties and containers and sheds that look like crumpled cans stacked on top of each other, hidden under layers of moss and vine. intensely coloured, a patchwork of colour and texture. while far from clean or safe, there is an intense interconnectedness and sense of community in the limerick. the narrow streets between stackhouses are even narrower now limerick lines them, the top levelsof the shanty stacks leaning down over and shading them. the true taliesin slum.

taliesin hives
the taliesin hives came about when the suburbs got wild and anything beyond them got dangerous and population flooded into the city. jumbled stacks of hastily-constructed apartment blocks, the hives are a ghetto and a forest come together. winter and trumpet creeper drape over concrete and glass overhead, shrubbery and wildflowers carpeting the lower levels, where the textures of peeling paint, wooden crates, steel containers, and more concrete mix to form shanty towns. most of the narrow streets are covered in grass rather than tarmac, and the sidewalks buckle over wide roots. predominantly human, the hives are not without crime but they are also bound by a strong sense of community -- they don't quite qualify as a slum, but it's certainly a place some aos si fear to tread. |
